"dots" is a performing arts group which has been creating unique "theatrical spaces" by using dance, projected images, lightings, sounds and other unique theatrical effects. In this September, dots will present a new performance “Kiss” at GARDEN OF FINE ARTS in Kitayama, Kyoto City.
Designed by Tadao Ando, GARDEN OF FINE ARTS is a non-roof art museum made of concrete and glass. Walking through the corridor, you will see a huge wall and the flow of water in a courtyard. A special stage for the performance will be set on this water place. The huge wall forms the background of the stage setting, and the water surface will be the stage where dancers will perform. Projected images, lightings, and sounds are effectively used on the water surface stage. Especially, when the rippling water surface reflects the images, the lightings and the body of dancers, it creates special atmosphere to the performance. This new performance “Kiss” would be one of the largest scale and monumental works throughout their carrier.
dots has been asking themselves a question about "What is the sense of reality and how we can feel it?", in their performance. In the process of finding answers to this question, they come up with many ideas and images. Based on these ideas and images, dots creates their original space, visuals, and performance.
For example, many old cloths and shoes are used for a stage set to symbolize “history” and “memory”. They hung these old cloths on the walls of the stage and visual images are projected to the wall. When dancers/performers stand in this space of “history and memory”, “the sense of living/reality” in our daily life was highlighted.
This new performance “KISS” is inspired by the huge wall and the water place in the Garden of Fine Arts. The venue gives people a strong impression of “the stream of time.” “the sense of individual existence.” When The comparison of these two elements is the main theme of this new performance.
